Auburn Tigers Roar to Fifth Consecutive Victory: Dominating Alabama State 94-37

Auburn Tigers Roar to Fifth Consecutive Victory: Auburn women’s basketball started its five-game home stretch with a resounding victory, triumphing over Alabama State 94-37 for the fifth consecutive win. The Tigers showcased a dominant performance on both ends of the court, stifling the winless Hornets.

Head coach Jonnie Harris emphasized the importance of a strong defensive start, and the Tigers delivered, limiting the Hornets to just two points in the first quarter. Auburn capitalized on Alabama State’s turnovers, scoring 21 of their 27 first-quarter points off 15 turnovers.

The Tigers’ defense reached new heights, setting a school record with 28 steals—the most since December 18, 2022, against Samford. Celia Sumbane led with five steals, followed by Taylen Collins and Kaitlyn Duhon with four each. Twelve out of the 15 Tigers on the court contributed a steal against Alabama State.

“We’ve been working on it. That’s our bread and butter—getting steals. Staying up the line. We were able to do that for our coaching staff,” expressed Auburn graduate student Honesty Scott-Grayson.

The coaching staff was indeed pleased, with Harris highlighting the significance of the steals and points off turnovers. The Tigers turned Alabama State’s 40 turnovers into 53 points, reaching a season-high total of 94.

Auburn’s defensive prowess set the tone for the offense, translating into an easier game. Collins, Sumbane, and Scott-Grayson not only led in scoring but also set new season highs against the Hornets.

“The chemistry is getting better. And our kids have always had chemistry since this group got here, but the chemistry on the floor comes with experience playing together. And I think you can see that,” Harris noted. “I think they’re starting to know each other, and they’re playing harder. They’re trusting each other.”

With a win streak of five, the Tigers aim to make it six against Norfolk State in the second of five consecutive home games at Neville Arena on Saturday, Dec. 16, with a 2 p.m. CST tipoff and television coverage on SECN+.
