AMPTP Challenge to WGA: Are Writers Ready to Respond

AMPTP Challenge to WGA: On Friday night, the AMPTP asked the WGA to talk about their new plan in a statement.

WGA asked AMPTP to tell its member companies to leave the partnership and work out their deal. The WGA said some companies might offer the writers what they want.

“The AMPTP members are negotiating together to find a solution,” the studio group said, dispelling any idea of disagreement.

The WGA strike has been going on for 130 days, and there have been no talks for three weeks. Both sides say the other side should start talking first.

After Union Day, Hollywood was busy for a week, so unions and management got together to talk. This was a turning point for many people hurt by the strike.

Showrunners and writer-producers use secret routes like WhatsApp to talk to each other. Even though there have been no reports of ultimatums or threats to break up WGA West and WGA East, members are getting more worried because the fall and winter holidays are coming. There will be little time for complicated talks in 2023.

Leaders and leaders in companies that are part of AMPTP are feeling more and more pressure. Due to production issues, the release dates for 2023 and 2024 will be changed. By the end of the week, there was a lot of talk in the business world about how a big Hollywood player might leave the AMPTP and make a separate deal with the WGA while the work stoppage continues.

The WGA said that the offer made by the AMPTP on August 11 stayed the same. However, the AMPTP said that the group answered only a few critical questions, especially about how many people a TV show needs to have on staff.

The studio alliance said, “The WGA has made progress for its members during negotiations and can move forward by responding to the AMPTP’s recent offers.”

The AMPTP set up a plan for the talks. On August 22, business leaders met with top executives from Disney, Netflix, Warner Bros. Discovery, and NBC Universal. The group called the meeting a “lecture” for two hours and urged everyone to take the offer on the table.
