Alabama Woman with Rare Double Uterus: A lady down here in Alabama, born with a rare double uterus, is carrying a double pregnancy.
the folks in Alabama, shared the story of Kelsey Hatcher and her hubby Caleb, who are adding two more to their bunch in a real medical head-scratcher. Now, they already got three little ones running around, ages 7, 2, and 2.
So, get this, Hatcher’s got two uteri, each with its own little entrance, you know, cervix. Found out she’s expecting during the spring. First ultrasound comes around, and she’s got some jaw-dropping news for Calebnot just one bun in the oven, but two, and in both of her uteri!
She told him, “I said, Well, theres two of them in there. And he said, Youre lying. I said, No, Im not.”
Dr. Shweta Patel, an OB/GYN, chimed in, calling Hatcher’s pregnancy “very, very rare.” Says some OB/GYNs can go their whole careers without laying eyes on something like this.
Now, because of Hatcher’s special setup, this pregnancy is high-risk.
Dr. Richard Davis, the high-risk pregnancies expert, explained, “A double cervix or double uterus is way under 1%, maybe three per 1,000 women might have that. And then the probability of you having a twin in each horn is really crazy.”
Both of Hatcher’s little girls are growing fine, but here’s the kickerwhen they’re born, whether it’s at the same time or not, that’s when the real challenge hits.
“When she goes into labor, if she does, then we will have to monitor each uterus and see which ones contracting, and if theyre doing sort of almost the same or theyre different,” Davis said.
Could be her uteri start their contractions at different times, meaning these little ladies might come into the world separated by a few hours, days, or even weeks.
Now, whether they’re twins or just sisters, Patel said, “I think medically, this is such a rare thing that we dont have a better way of describing it besides still calling them twins.”
