Alabama Senator Hawley Stands Firm: Against 2024 NDAA, Demands Justice

Alabama Senator Hawley Stands Firm: The U.S. Senate took a significant step on Thursday, voting 85 to 15 to move forward with the final debate on the 2024 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).

Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri raised a roadblock by demanding a roll call vote, potentially signaling the first of many challenges he plans to pose.

While the final NDAA brings positive changes for the U.S. military, such as a 5.2% pay raise—the largest in two decades—it also allocates substantial funds to defense contractors, including purchases not requested by the Pentagon.

“Twenty-six billion that they didn’t ask for in one year,” noted Hawley, expressing his readiness for battle. In a move that has sparked controversy, the NDAA negotiators stripped the act of providing compensation for St. Louis families affected by radiation exposure from World War Two’s atomic bomb development.

Hawley emphasized the personal impact, sharing the story of a girl named Zoey suffering from cancer due to nuclear contamination from the Manhattan Project. Without compensation for affected families, Hawley has vowed to impede the final passage of the NDAA.

He asserted, “I am not going to go along and make this easy. I’m going to make this hard,” drawing inspiration from his Alabama colleague Tommy Tuberville‘s prolonged objection to military promotions over Pentagon abortion policy.

While critics accused Tuberville of compromising national security, Hawley remains resolute, stating, “We’ll get this done. I am never gonna walk away from this fight. Period.”
