Alabama Power Hits Milestone Plant Barry Unit 8: Alabama Power’s Plant Barry Unit 8 achieved full operational status on November 1, marking a significant milestone after successful tests. The facility, which combines a gas turbine with a steam turbine, is designed to efficiently generate electricity for households throughout Alabama.

Plant Barry Unit 8 has a capacity to generate up to 727 megawatts, equivalent to powering more than 200,000 homes, according to Beth Thomas from Alabama Power’s Mobile Division.

Brandon Dillard, Alabama Power’s senior vice president and senior production officer, highlighted the use of advanced and efficient technology in generating electricity from natural gas. Construction of the project began in 2021, overcoming challenges posed by the global pandemic and supply chain disruptions.

The construction phase involved 2 million work hours, contributing to the facility’s annual property tax estimate of approximately $4 million. With the completion of Plant Barry Unit 8, the total generating capacity at the Plant Barry site now stands at 3,246 megawatts.

Dillard emphasized the significance of Plant Barry Unit 8 as an important milestone for planning the future, ensuring the continued provision of exceptional service to customers for generations to come.
