Alabama House Speaker Race: New Contenders Step In as Jim Jordan Exits

Alabama House Speaker Race: The race for House speaker is heating up in Alabama, with a fresh set of candidates stepping into the spotlight after Rep. Jim Jordan’s departure. The field includes familiar faces and newcomers, all vying for the coveted position. The House Republicans are set to hold a candidate forum to assess their options, but it remains uncertain if any candidate can secure the 217 votes needed for the top spot.

One notable contender is Tom Emmer, the House majority whip, who aims to bring “historic change” as the potential speaker. Emmer, endorsed by McCarthy, is seen as someone with a track record of success and the ability to lead from day one. However, his stance on certifying the 2020 election may face resistance from some quarters.

Another contender is Markwayne Mullin, an Oklahoma Republican and chair of the Republican Study Committee. Mullin, known for his hardline stance, plans to run for speaker, emphasizing his commitment to garner support. As a member of the House Freedom Caucus, he could attract votes from those skeptical of the current GOP leadership.

Also in the race is Jack Bergman, a 40-year Marine veteran, confident in his ability to secure votes where others might falter. His military background and service on the House Armed Services Committee could be assets in his bid for the speakership.

Austin Scott, a seven-term Georgia Republican, reenters the race after briefly challenging Jordan. A staunch defender of McCarthy, Scott brings years of political experience, starting in the Georgia House of Representatives in 1997.

Lastly, Byron Donalds, a Florida Republican and Freedom Caucus member, seeks the speakership to advance a “conservative vision.” Serving his second term, Donalds emphasizes his support for Trump, gun ownership, and a pro-life stance.

The race for House speaker in Alabama is entering a crucial phase, with these candidates hoping to secure the support needed to lead the House of Representatives.
