The Tide, now 2-0, showcased their offensive prowess, maintaining a scoring momentum from their previous game against Morehead State. Despite facing challenges in defending the perimeter and countering the Sycamores’ backdoor cuts, secured their 17th consecutive win in Coleman Coliseum.
Coach Nate Oats deployed Aaron Estrada, Mark Sears, Grant Nelson, Rylan Griffen, and Nick Pringle as the starting five. While Indiana State initially took a 9-0 lead, Estrada’s three-pointers, along with contributions from Griffen and Jarin Stevenson, led to a 15-0 run by the Tide. Although the Sycamores fought back and briefly regained the lead, ‘ closed the first half with a 48-37 advantage.
The second half saw adjustments in both offensive and defensive strategies. Sears and Nelson took charge, driving the lane and creating opportunities. Despite challenges in containing Indiana State’s backdoor cuts, a late scoring surge, spearheaded by Sears and Nelson, secured a comfortable lead. The Tide celebrated a 102-80 victory, marking their 17th consecutive win in Coleman Coliseum.
Estrada stood out with 27 points, five rebounds, five assists, and stellar performance in 31 minutes. Sears contributed 24 points, showcasing efficiency in shooting. Nelson, despite a first-half injury, bounced back in the second half, finishing with 20 points, eight rebounds, and valuable contributions. Stevenson added 10 points to the quartet of double-digit scorers.
The defensive aspect remains a focus for improvement, with the Tide acknowledging the need to tighten up their game. While the offense thrives with unselfish ball movement and skilled shooters, defensive adjustments will be crucial for future success.
