Alabama GOP Withdraws Lawyer Daniel Boma: from 5th District Congressional Race

Alabama GOP Withdraws Lawyer Daniel Boma: The Alabama Republican Party has withdrawn Daniel Boman, a disbarred lawyer facing a theft charge, from the Congressional race in the 5th District.

Boman acknowledged the party’s decision, conveyed by the candidate committee on Sunday night after a hearing in Birmingham. Despite the disappointment, the 49-year-old hopes to rejoin the Republican Party as a candidate in the future.

Initially challenging U.S. Rep. Dale Strong, R-Huntsville, in the March 5 primary, Boman’s removal leaves Strong without a Republican opponent. The district also lacks Democratic qualifiers.

While accepting the decision, Boman expressed optimism about changing minds in the future and rejoining the Republican Party.

In 2019, the Alabama State Bar suspended Boman for racist and misogynistic language used during a 2017 phone call. In 2020, facing allegations of misappropriating funds and engaging in unauthorized law practice, he consented to disbarment. Currently facing a first-degree theft charge, he pleaded not guilty in Lamar County.

The state Republican Party refrained from commenting on Boman’s candidacy, citing a longstanding policy. Boman, elected as a Republican to the Alabama House of Representatives in 2010, switched parties in 2011 and lost reelection in 2012 as the Democratic nominee for Congress in the 4th District.

Despite his challenges, Boman asserts consistent support for Republicans since 2016. He remains hopeful for redemption, acknowledging the door is not closed for his return, citing the Republican Party’s belief in redemption. Boman intends to work towards that redemption, emphasizing personal growth and commitment to the party.
