AI vs. Hollywood Writers: Protecting Creativity in Labor Battles

AI vs. Hollywood Writers: After a 148-day strike, Hollywood screenwriters won the right to block AI from writing scripts. This was a pivotal moment in the labour dispute over creative AI.

During the strike, AI’s use in screenwriting became the main focus. Before the strike, it wasn’t a huge deal.

The Authors Guild and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers have tentatively agreed to require studios and production companies to disclose their use of AI in author-related creations. AI can’t be credited for writing or used to create new “literary material.”

This agreement, ensuring AI doesn’t fully replace human creativity, is seen as a potential model by content-making companies.

The agreement recognizes AI’s importance in filmmaking but prohibits businesses from mandating AI tool usage for writers. The rapid AI growth has made communication difficult.

Companies don’t explicitly forbid using scripts to train AI, but writers can still claim misuse.

This deal sets a standard for the creative sector, including actors concerned about AI’s impact on their jobs.

Even if some doubt the effectiveness of these precautions, it’s evident that AI-related labour issues in the creative industry are just beginning, and more talks and discussions lie ahead.
