Auburn JaVarrius Johnson Enters Transfer Portal: A Shift in the Wide Receiver room

Auburn JaVarrius Johnson Enters Transfer Portal: After two seasons as Auburn’s leading wide receiver in receiving yards, Ja’Varrius Johnson is set to enter the transfer portal on Friday, as reported by 247Sports. The Hewitt-Trussville product amassed over 1,110 receiving yards in the last three seasons, making him the most productive Auburn player in the wide receiver room during his four years on campus.

Despite leading Auburn wide receivers in yards for the past two years, Johnson wasn’t able to establish himself as the go-to receiver Auburn needed. However, he had an outstanding performance in the Iron Bowl to close the 2023 regular season, showcasing his potential as a top receiver.

Auburn has other options for the slot receiver position, including Caleb Burton entering his second year with Auburn and highly-rated transfer Robert Lewis from Georgia State.

Johnson joins three other Auburn receivers, Jyaire Shorter, Omari Kelly, and Malcolm Johnson Jr., in the transfer portal. This announcement follows Robby Ashford putting his name in the portal earlier on Friday.

With Johnson’s departure, Auburn’s wide receiver room is left with four returning players: Koy Moore, Jay Fair, Camden Brown, and Burton. The roster for the upcoming Music City Bowl on Dec. 30 will feature only seven scholarship wide receivers, with only two of them recording double-digit catches this season.

Auburn is set to welcome its highest-rated class of freshman receivers in program history, featuring five-star recruits Cam Coleman and Perry Thompson, along with four-star commits Malcolm Simmons and Bryce Cain. This marks a significant overhaul and reset for a wide receiver room that faced challenges in the 2024 season.
