Former Corrections Deputy Seeks Bail Reduction in Fentanyl Trafficking Case

Former Corrections Deputy Seeks Bail Reduction: An attorney representing Jessica Monique Odom, a former Mobile County corrections deputy charged with fentanyl trafficking, requested a reduction in her $1 million bail.

The defense argued that Mobile County District Judge George Zoghby had previously dismissed a promoting prison contraband charge against Odom due to insufficient evidence, and the trafficking charge was connected to her job as a corrections deputy.

The defense presented evidence indicating that bonds in other cases involving corrections officers have ranged from $500,000 to as low as $7,500. The judge did not immediately rule on the request.

Odom, arrested in August, is accused of drug smuggling inside the Mobile County Metro Jail, potentially linked to a fatal overdose by an inmate.

The case relies on information from a confidential informant, but the defense argues that prosecutors have failed to provide evidence showing Odom knowingly met with the informant for drug-related purposes. The defense also claims entrapment, as Odom was reportedly dressed for a date, not in her corrections uniform, during the meeting initiated by investigators.

The defense pointed out that Odom had previously turned down a $10,000 offer from the informant to deliver drugs to someone and voluntarily consented to a search of her house, where no drug paraphernalia was found. Odom has no prior criminal history.
