Huntsville City Schools Staffer Calls for Ethics Probe President Nepotism Policy Vote

Huntsville City Schools Staffer Calls for Ethics: A former Huntsville City Schools staffer contends that the school board president, Ryan Renaud, should not have voted for a nepotism policy change that seemed to favor him. Keith Ward, who retired in 2019 after two decades as the communications director, urges the Alabama Ethics Commission to investigate Renaud for his 2021 vote. Renaud defends himself, asserting he did nothing wrong.

The previous policy would have prevented Renaud’s future wife, a teacher, from continuing to work in the school district. The alleged violation occurred on December 7th, 2021, when Renaud supported changing the policy that initially barred board members’ immediate family from school district employment.

Ward argues that without this policy change, Renaud’s wife would have had to seek employment in another district. Renaud, who got married three months after his vote, denies any wrongdoing, stating that Ward’s complaint is baseless.

Ward also accuses Renaud of interfering with the school system’s daily operations. A leaked email revealed Renaud criticizing an elementary school principal, claiming they created a “toxic environment.” Renaud defended his email, emphasizing the need for staff to seek support from central office admin when necessary.

Ward alleges that Renaud violated two provisions of the School Board Governance Improvement Act. These provisions relate to decisions serving personal interests and attempts to influence the school system’s operations contrary to the superintendent’s responsibilities. Renaud maintains his confidence in complying with the Alabama Code of Ethics and the School Board Governance Improvement Act of 2012.
