Birmingham Chef Timothy J. Powell: Home of Hearty Plates and Culinary Delights

Birmingham Chef Timothy J. Powell: Timothy J. Powell, a 36-year-old chef from Birmingham, has created a culinary haven at O’Taste & See, a family-owned eatery in the Crestwood Festival Centre. Renowned as the “Home of the Heavy Plates,” Powell’s restaurant stands out for its hearty dishes and generous portions, reflecting his philosophy of ensuring customers leave satisfied and full.

Powell, without formal culinary training, attributes his cooking skills to divine inspiration. Born to two pastors, he started cooking for church spaghetti dinners, eventually opening O’Taste & See in December 2022. The restaurant, tucked away near a Burlington store and a movie theater, has become a local sensation, drawing customers through word-of-mouth and social media.

The name, inspired by Psalms 34:8, reflects Powell’s faith and commitment to offering delectable food. Sundays witness long lines outside O’Taste & See, with customers eager to savor dishes reminiscent of home-cooked meals. Powell’s menu, organized as a meat-and-two, often transforms into a meat-and-five due to customers’ love for additional sides.

While various dishes have gained popularity, Powell highlights the hamburger steak as a standout favorite. Featuring onions and homemade gravy over a bed of rice, it exemplifies Powell’s dedication to cooking from the soul and ensuring each bite reflects the difference made with passion and care.
