Former Michigan Assistant George Helow Joins: Crimson Tide Coaching Staff

Former Michigan Assistant George Helow Joins: George Helow may not ring a bell for Michigan football fans gearing up for the Rose Bowl clash with Alabama.

As per reports from the Athletic and other sources, Alabama’s head coach, Nick Saban, made an unexpected move by bringing on board the former Michigan football assistant, Helow, as a linebackers coach for the Crimson Tide ahead of the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1.

Helow is set to begin his work with Alabama immediately. Coleman Hutzler, a linebackers coach for the Crimson Tide, is leaving for Mississippi State. While it’s unclear if Helow will coach on the sidelines for the Alabama game, his insights could prove invaluable.

Not part of the Michigan football team’s staff this past season, Helow’s role was taken over by Chris Partridge, who was eventually terminated for NCAA-related communication with other Michigan personnel.

During the 2022 season, Helow served as the linebackers coach for the Wolverines under defensive coordinator Jesse Minter. With ties to South Florida and previous coaching experience under Nick Saban at Alabama, as well as stints at Georgia, Maryland, and Colorado State, Helow brings a diverse background to the Crimson Tide.

This strategic move by Saban adds an interesting layer of gamesmanship. While within the rules, Helow could potentially become a full-time member of the staff next season.

For Nick Saban, securing a linebackers coach with inside knowledge from Michigan is an opportunity too good to pass up. Saban’s track record of national championships reflects his strategic prowess. Perhaps this move signals Alabama’s concern about the defensive scheme employed by Michigan.
