Moulton Middle School Introduces Teacher Development Program: Collaboration with AMSTI

Moulton Middle School Introduces Teacher Development: Moulton Middle School (MMS) is pioneering an innovative teacher development program in collaboration with the Alabama Math Science and Technology Initiative Athens State (AMSTI). This groundbreaking initiative involves specialized coaching labs, a first-of-its-kind approach in the state, aimed at enhancing peer learning and educational improvement.

Vice Principal Tina Coan explained that the program involves hosting coaching labs where educators can both teach and learn from their colleagues. Unlike traditional methods, this initiative taps into the wealth of experience and expertise already present within the school’s faculty. Teachers who excel in various subjects or methodologies share their successful strategies, fostering a collaborative process that aims to streamline the transfer of effective teaching techniques.

The concept of teacher labs was inspired by the success of coaching labs developed through collaboration with AMSTI and educational coaching expert Diane Sweeney. These labs proved effective in enhancing coaching practices, leading to the application of similar concepts to teaching.

“We find a teacher who is strong in one area, and we find out what they’re doing so that they can bring that back and share with the other teachers, and from there, those teachers can tweak it and make it their own,” explained Vice Principal Coan. “It’s all about networking. It’s all about finding ways we can improve.”

The success of the first coaching lab, held in October, has encouraged MMS to schedule another session for January, continuing to foster collaboration and excellence among its teaching staff.
