LSU and NASA Lunar Collaboration: In a unique collaboration, LSU is teaming up with scientists from NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Alabama to delve into lunar materials for constructing extraterrestrial habitats.

The researchers are delving into the possibilities of life beyond Earth, specifically envisioning living conditions on the moon and, potentially, Mars.

“Our research has demonstrated the feasibility of printing this material and utilizing it for construction. With this project, our next phase is to delve into studying the space resilience of these materials,” explained Ali Kazemian, LSU Bert S. Turner Construction Management Assistant Professor.

The ambitious plan involves sending two astronauts to the moon to kickstart the process of establishing a lasting presence there, with the mission slated for 2025.

Beyond lunar exploration, the researchers aspire to address pressing issues such as disaster relief, global housing shortages, and drought.

“As inhabitants of planet Earth, which is a closed system with limited resources, we are inevitably going to face resource depletion. Therefore, contemplating the future entails harnessing space resources,” Kazemian elaborated.

Moreover, the potential applications of 3D-printed sulfur concrete on Earth are envisioned to contribute to building more affordable and quicker houses, presenting a potential solution for a sustainable future.
