Calls for Censure Rise in Decatur City Council: Amidst Controversial Comments

Calls for Censure Rise in Decatur City Council: During Decatur City Council’s recent work session, calls for censuring Councilman Hunter Pepper were made due to his comments supporting the officers involved in the Steve Perkins shooting. Community members expressed concern about Pepper’s actions and called for formal censure, alleging he violated rules by releasing information about the case.

Blake Stewart, a Decatur resident, urged the council to censure Pepper for releasing information, stating, “And in Mr. Pepper’s case releasing false information about personnel.” Jacob Ladner, the council president, expressed disbelief in the accuracy of Pepper’s statements and found them inappropriate.

Pepper, who sent an email and held a press conference supporting the officers before Mayor Tab Bowling’s determination hearings, faced criticism for potentially influencing the outcome. Ladner suggested that Pepper’s actions may be an attempt to gain attention rather than focusing on moving the city forward.

Community members, echoing Ladner’s concerns, emphasized the need for healing in Decatur. Dr. Yvette Rice expressed doubts about Police Chief Todd Pinion’s ability to lead the department, citing the shooting incident under his watch and the perceived lack of confidence from citizens. She emphasized the importance of leadership, respect, and accountability in the city.
