First Solar Powers Deal with Swift Current Energy: First Solar, Inc. has secured a contract to supply 500 megawatts (MW) of Series 7 thin film modules to Swift Current Energy. Boston-based Swift Current Energy, specializing in utility-scale clean energy, has already acquired 3.3 gigawatts of First Solar modules in 2022. The recent order, disclosed before First Solar’s Q3 2023 results, involves module deliveries scheduled between 2027 and 2028.

Swift Current Energy, with over 2.5 GW of deployed renewable energy projects and a project pipeline exceeding 10 GW, plays a significant role in the clean energy sector. First Solar, known for its responsibly produced advanced thin film photovoltaic (PV) modules, sets industry standards in quality, durability, reliability, design, and environmental performance.

First Solar’s Series 7 modules boast the lowest carbon and water footprint among commercially available PV modules, earning recognition in the Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT) global registry for sustainable electronics. As the largest solar manufacturer in the Western Hemisphere, First Solar aims to reach 14 GW in the US and 25 GW globally by 2026.

With a third Ohio factory commissioned and expansions planned in Ohio, Alabama, and Louisiana, First Solar’s strategic growth aligns with US-made components, adhering to domestic content guidelines. The Louisiana and Alabama facilities, representing over $2 billion in investment, are expected to commence shipments in 2024 and 2026, respectively, producing Series 7 modules.

Upon completion, Series 7 modules are projected to constitute over two-thirds of First Solar’s annual domestic nameplate capacity. The Ohio facility already incorporates US-made glass and steel in Series 7 modules.

Swift Current Energy’s CEO, Eric Lammers, highlighted the importance of the agreement for a resilient, competitive value chain and supporting domestic manufacturing. Georges Antoun, First Solar’s Chief Commercial Officer, expressed excitement about extending the partnership with Swift Current Energy and delivering competitive value in energy and advanced PV modules.
