Councilman Ben Reynolds Takes a Stand: Against Warehouse Project Mobile Wetlands

Councilman Ben Reynolds Takes a Stand: In Mobile, Alabama, Councilman Ben Reynolds is at the forefront of a heated debate over a proposed warehouse project in his district. Opposing taxpayer-funded incentives for developers, Reynolds has been vocal about the need to protect wetlands on the designated site near Rabbit Creek in the Dog River watershed. Recent developments have raised concerns that the extent of wetland filling could surpass initial estimates.

Reynolds highlights the growing citizen opposition, noting that city leaders have received nearly 3,000 emails against the project. Emphasizing the importance of preserving wetlands, he expresses worries that more wetlands may be impacted than originally outlined.

Mobile Baykeeper, echoing Reynolds’ concerns, emphasizes the environmental repercussions of wetland filling. Cade Kistler, Baykeeper, points out the adverse effects on pollution filtration, sediment control, and flood prevention as wetlands are compromised.

The project, spearheaded by Scannell Properties, initially proposed filling 86.9 acres of wetlands in an application to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in March. However, discrepancies emerge as a map submitted to planning and zoning in October 2022 indicates additional phases that could impact even more wetlands.

Kistler underscores a common tactic in focusing on higher-quality wetlands initially, potentially facilitating future approval for filling others. Reynolds questions the developers’ intentions, challenging whether they plan to execute only a fraction of the project with taxpayer money or the entire venture, generating thousands of jobs.

In advocating for wetland preservation, Reynolds proposes placing the wetlands under a conservation easement to ensure long-term protection. He confronts the dilemma of whose voices should prevail—those of a Chicago-based billion-dollar company or the citizens the leaders are elected to represent.
