Alabama Accelerates Dollar 30 Million Electric Vehicle: A $30 million workforce training center focused on electric vehicle technology is coming to Decatur.
Governor Kay Ivey shared the news, revealing that the facility will be located on the campus of the Alabama Robotics Technology Park, a $73 million training center by AIDT.
The new center, designed by Goodwyn Mills and Cawood (GMC), is set to be expandable, covering up to 40,000 square feet, with the ability to adapt to future demands. AIDT Director Ed Castile estimates it will be operational within 18 to 24 months.
This initiative aims to prepare Alabama’s workforce for the shift to electric powertrains in the automotive industry. The training center will play a crucial role in developing skills needed for the evolving automotive landscape.
Governor Ivey expressed her commitment to making Alabama a global force in the auto industry, highlighting the state’s leadership in workforce development. The investment signals the state’s dedication to staying at the forefront of automotive technologies.
Funding for the new training center was approved by the Alabama Legislature in the last session, with support from state Senator Arthur Orr. AIDT and the Alabama Commerce Department are collaborating with industry leaders and partners like the Alabama Mobility and Power Center at the University of Alabama, the Alabama Community College System, and the state’s K-12 school system to shape programs for the center based on insights from visits to EV battery factories in Japan and Europe.
