High school football, a significant part of Alabama culture, took a backseat to the unfolding tragedy. In the seventh grade at Troy Junior High School, our homeroom teacher, Mrs. Elaine Dodson, received the heartbreaking news from the music teacher, Jerry SpannPresident Kennedy had been shot.
Traumatized, we witnessed the unfolding events over the next three days through the lens of television. The funeral preparations and the Monday funeral itself captivated the nation. The image of the riderless white horse and the heart-wrenching salute from little John John Kennedy, a two-year-old, left an indelible mark on our collective memory.
Despite political aspirations, John John’s life was cut short in a plane crash, echoing the untimely fate of his father. A captivating and handsome young man, I can’t help but believe he might have ascended to the presidency.

While I am not a conspiracy theorist, historical facts offer intriguing insights. Lyndon Johnson, a ruthless and power-hungry politician, played a role in influencing Kennedy’s decision to campaign in Dallas. The Secret Service, concerned about the risks, advised Kennedy against using the main artery boulevard. Johnson, however, insisted on this route, citing Texas tradition.
In a desperate attempt to protect the President, the Secret Service proposed a protective bubble. Johnson opposed, asserting it would make Kennedy appear distant. Sadly, Kennedy yielded to Johnson’s insistence. The tragic consequences unfolded as a sitting duck, vulnerable to a sharpshooter.
The haunting images of Jackie Kennedy’s blood-stained pink dress, a two-year-old bidding farewell to his father, and the riderless white horse remain etched in my memory. The 1960s was a tumultuous era, and November 22, 1963, stands as a somber milestone in the minds of many from our generation.
