Jamie Carragher Analyzes Liverpool Strategy: Ahead of Clash with Manchester City

Jamie Carragher Analyzes Liverpool Strategy: Jamie Carragher thinks Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool face a ‘tactical puzzle’ as they head to Manchester City in the Premier League. The Reds, just one point behind City, were lucky in their last away match against Luton and can’t afford the same mistakes in Manchester.

City dominated Liverpool on April 1, 2023, winning 4-1, but they were 22 points ahead in the table at that time. Trent Alexander-Arnold’s role in Liverpool’s tactics, evolving into a midfielder, is seen as a tactical move credited to Pep Guardiola.

Carragher, in The Telegraph, stated, “Liverpool’s ‘Trent System’ was effectively conceived in Manchester. The team’s recovery since then speaks for itself and explains why they return to the Etihad with such high hopes.”

However, Carragher cautioned about Alexander-Arnold’s roaming role, emphasizing the focus on his right foot’s prowess rather than his one-to-one defending flaw.

Carragher highlighted Luton’s strategy to exploit the left space against Liverpool, almost securing a win, suggesting Guardiola might target the same weakness.

“Guardiola will be zoning in on this. It is no coincidence that Grealish enjoyed one of his best games in a Manchester City shirt against Liverpool in April, relishing the space and time he was afforded on the left as he got the better of Alexander-Arnold in one-to-one duels.”

He added, “City provides the acid test for a side on an upward trajectory. We will soon have the truest measure of the progress of Liverpool and their ‘Trent System’.”
