Escambia County Launches K6 Pilot Program: at Cordova Park and West Pensacola Elementary Schools

Escambia County Launches K6 Pilot Program: In Escambia County, a new pilot program is set to reshape the traditional elementary to middle school transition. Starting next year, Cordova Park and West Pensacola elementary schools will integrate sixth-grade classes. Recognizing that not all sixth graders may be mature or prepared for middle school, the initiative aims to address the hesitations of students and parents.

West Pensacola Elementary Principal, Christine Baker, a mother herself, observed her child’s struggles with the transition to another school. She believes that adding sixth grade to elementary schools will provide students with an opportunity to build confidence before moving on to middle school.

The selection of Cordova Park and West Pensacola elementary schools was based on factors like location, academics, and capacity. Other schools looking to adopt the program in the future would need to meet similar criteria.

Baker emphasizes that the program offers fifth graders a choice—they are not compelled to stay at the school. Students can opt to remain at West Pensacola for sixth grade, attend their zoned school, or explore other available options. Regardless of their choice, Baker assures parents that their child will have a positive experience in sixth grade.
