Baldwin County Drainage Projects: Grants to help

Baldwin County Drainage Projects: In Baldwin County, when the skies open up, the smaller, aging drainage pipes struggle to keep pace. A welcomed storm water grant from the Alabama Department of Environmental Management is set to tackle flooding issues along County Road 68 near Buc-ee’s and at Main Street and Forest Park Drive near Montrose.

Mark Acreman, the assistant county engineer, explains the mission: not just replacing worn-out structures due to age, but also enlarging them to handle the periodic heavy rains in Baldwin County. These critical repairs are much-needed at these two locations.

The design phase is on the horizon, taking about six months. Consequently, the actual work on both projects might not kick off for around a year.

Timing is key, with a preference for a slower season, especially on CR 68, which witnesses high summer traffic between Buc-ee’s and Highway 59. The aim is to minimize traffic impacts during the project.

While ADEM covers a significant portion of the project costs, the county still bears some expenses. Main Street improvements are estimated at $81,000, and $162,000 will be allocated for the work on CR 68.

Look out for the projects going out for bid in the middle of next year.
