Grammy Glory for the Blind Boys of Alabama: Nominated Thrice for Echoes of the South

Grammy Glory for the Blind Boys of Alabama: The Blind Boys of Alabama, hailing from the Alabama Institute for the Negro Blind in Talladega, received three Grammy nominations for their latest album, “Echoes of the South.” The harmonizing gospel group, formed in the 1930s, already boasts five Grammy Awards and 12 previous nominations.

Their nominations include Best Roots Gospel Album for “Echoes of the South,” Best American Roots Performance for “Heaven Help Us All,” and Best Americana Performance for “Friendship,” all part of the 11-track album released by Single Lock Records. The record company celebrated the nominations on social media.

“Echoes of the South” is a testament to the Blind Boys’ commitment to their gospel roots, featuring traditional spirituals, gospel classics, and vintage soul and R&B tunes. The album pays homage to the group’s history, with its name derived from the Birmingham radio program where they had their first professional performance in 1944.

Despite the losses of original members like Clarence Fountain and George Scott, the Blind Boys, with members like 91-year-old Jimmy Carter, continue to create powerful and timeless music.

The Grammy winners will be announced on Feb 4, 2024, in Los Angeles, with the Blind Boys competing in categories typically part of the Grammys Premiere Ceremony. This event precedes the televised ceremony and is held at the Peacock Theater, formerly known as the Microsoft Theater, in Los Angeles. The Blind Boys face competition from Alabama native Jason Isbell and others in the categories they are nominated for.
