Alabama CD2 Showdown: Three GOP Contenders Vie for Open Seat Demographic Shifts and Political Primary Battle

Alabama CD2 Showdown: Three Republicans are throwing their hats in the ring for Alabama’s Second Congressional District (CD2). State Senator Greg Albritton from Atmore, former State Senator Dick Brewbaker from Pike Road, and prominent real estate attorney Caroleene Dobson from Montgomery have all qualified with the Alabama Republican Party to run for the U.S. House of Representatives in the redrawn CD2.

While CD2 is currently represented by Congressman Barry Moore (R-Enterprise), recent redrawing by a court-appointed special master has resulted in a shift. Moore’s native Coffee County is now part of CD1, leading him to challenge incumbent Congressman Jerry Carl (R-Mobile) for the First Congressional District. This change has left CD2 as a rare open seat, encompassing all of Montgomery County, the eastern half of the Blackbelt, the northern half of the Wiregrass, the counties north of Mobile, and most of Mobile.

The demographic shift is notable, with the new CD2 being 48.7% Black, compared to the previous 28%. Analysis of recent elections indicates that if CD2 were in its current configuration, Democrats would have won 16 out of the last 17 congressional elections. However, under the previous drawing, Republicans secured 16 of the last 17 elections in CD2.

Despite these challenges, three Republicans are undeterred.

Greg Albritton, Chairman of the General Fund Finance & Taxation Committee in the Alabama State Senate, is a retired naval officer with a background in destroyers and cruisers. He resides in Atmore (in CD1) but has a residence in Range in Conecuh County.

Dick Brewbaker, a native of Montgomery and a former two-term Alabama Senator (2010-2018), owned automobile dealerships in Montgomery for decades. Brewbaker emphasized the need for a representative in Congress to stand up for conservative values and address issues such as out-of-control spending, inflation, and the situation in the Middle East.

The Republican primary is slated for March 5, and the eventual nominee will face the Democratic party nominee in the general election a year from now. As of now, five Democrats have qualified to run in CD2, with more reportedly considering entering the race.

Major party qualifying ends at 5:00 p.m. on Friday.
