Alabama Nonprofit Transforms Cotton Mill: In the heart of Prichard, where homes once stood forgotten and worn, a local nonprofit is turning the tide. The Cotton Mill community, once overrun and neglected, is becoming a haven for veterans. Rodney Clements, a man with 17 years of military service etched into his story, believes in giving back to those who’ve given their all.
“When you step into civilian life, the rhythm changes. Not everyone shares that military cadence, and it can be disorienting for a veteran,” says Clements.
His nonprofit, the Prosperity Community Development Council, joined by dedicated partners, is breathing new life into the Cotton Mill. Dilapidated homes are undergoing a transformation, evolving into modern havens for veterans. The initial home boasts three bedrooms, two baths, and over 1800 square feet of comfort.
“We’re not just renovating the interiors; we’re reshaping the landscape, clearing away the debris that time forgot,” notes Clements.
Over the years, the community faded into obscurity as the hum of cotton mills dwindled. Businesses left, people followed, and the Cotton Mill stood resilient but overlooked. Clements envisions a future where at least 60 homes stand tall, each a testament to honoring veterans. Recreational facilities and counseling services will complement the revitalization, creating a supportive environment.
“We want these vets to realize they deserve the recognition for their service. Being honored and praised is a powerful reminder of the brotherhood we cherish,” expresses Clements.
