Mobile County Faces West Nile Virus: Health Officer Urges Caution Amid Rising Cases

Mobile County Faces West Nile Virus: MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – The Mobile County Health Department, led by Dr. Kevin Philip Michaels, confirms the fifth human case of West Nile Virus (WNV) in the area this year.

WNV, a mosquito-borne encephalitis, poses the highest risk of encephalitis spread by mosquitoes from August until the first fall freeze, caution health officials.

Those affected by WNV and other mosquito-borne diseases may experience symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, nausea, stiff neck, confusion, muscle weakness, paralysis, disorientation, and seizures requiring medical attention. In rare cases, WNV can lead to coma or death, particularly impacting the elderly, as health data reveals.

Vector Services will intensify spraying and conduct door-to-door surveys in immediate areas. Inspectors aim to trap adult mosquitoes, testing for WNV presence, as outlined by the health department.

While humans and horses can fall ill from the infection, it cannot be transmitted between people or horses. Personal mosquito avoidance and the use of WNV and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) vaccines in horses can reduce the likelihood of transmission.

Regrettably, there are no WNV or EEE vaccines available for humans, according to the health department.”
