Ethan Crawford Journey: First Southern Miss Football Touchdown a Year After ACL Injury

Ethan Crawford Journey: HATTIESBURG – Ethan Crawford’s journey to Southern Miss took unexpected turns.

His inaugural touchdown last week mirrored this unpredictability. The freshman quarterback, in just five plays during the defeat against Appalachian State, secured his first touchdown with a 10-yard rushing score in the second quarter. Choosing between a throw and a run left, he improvised, slicing to the right, untouched into the end zone.

“My eyes went blurry,” Crawford recalled. “So much adrenaline. I told Coach (Jordy) Joseph, I hadn’t been in the end zone in over a year, ready to get back in. Didn’t know how it felt anymore.”

This on-the-fly move encapsulates his shift from a three-star recruit to earning significant playing time.

Knee injury disrupts high school career

Crawford, a standout at Hillcrest High School near the University of Alabama, trained with Galu Tagovailoa, father of NFL quarterbacks Tua and Taulia Tagovailoa. However, his high school season took a tragic turn during the last regular-season game. The Patriots, undefeated at 9-0, were poised for a state championship when Crawford, hurdling a defender, landed awkwardly, tearing his ACL and ending his season.

Despite the setback, Southern Miss, undeterred, welcomed the three-star recruit, who enrolled early, dedicating most of his time to rehabilitation and adjusting to a new environment.

“People follow him,” remarked Southern Miss coach Will Hall. “Great charisma, great smile, and a great skill set. A great runner with a live arm. We still need to work on his mechanics a bit, but he comes from a great family.”

Securing his debut touchdown at Southern Miss

In the lead-up to last week’s game, Hall relinquished offensive play-calling duties, and the starting quarterback position became more fluid. Although Billy Wiles retained his starting role, a collaborative effort between Joseph, Hall, and Gregg introduced a package featuring Crawford.

While Crawford didn’t attempt a pass, he completed two carries for 12 yards. An eight-yard rush was nullified due to a penalty.

“He handled it well,” Joseph commented. “Probably should’ve played him a bit more.”

This marked Crawford’s first appearance since the season opener against Alcorn State. His performance opened doors for speculation on his role going forward. He can play two more games without sacrificing his redshirt for the season, and if this is his sole contribution in 2023, the significance of securing his maiden career touchdown could resonate as he matures within the program.

“Expect to see one-three in the end zone again,” Crawford affirmed. “So, just be prepared.”

Jay Stanley faces another injury but remains expected to play

Southern Miss starting safety Jay Stanley missed Tuesday’s practice due to an MCL injury but returned Wednesday. Although dealing with injuries, Stanley is anticipated to contribute against Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday (3 p.m., ESPN+), emphasizing his commitment to the Golden Eagles’ challenging season.
