Historic Golf Performance: It’s been a semester of ups and downs for golf, often finding themselves in the bottom half of invitational standings. Starting the fall tournaments with a tenth-place finish at the Argent Financial Classic and a 15th-place finish at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational, the team struggled initially.
However, a remarkable turnaround occurred at the Grier Jones Shocker Invitational in Newton, Kan., hosted by Wichita State University. The team secured a historic third-place finish, shooting a final 17 under para new school record. Graduate student golfer Jay Kirchdorfer led the charge, setting a new career-best for a round and tying the school record through 36 holes.
Kirchdorfer emphasized the importance of this event, stating, “After two mediocre events to start the year, it was important for us to piece a good event together and move things in the right direction.”
The team’s final fall tournament at the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational in Loxley, Ala., didn’t end as desired, finishing last. Despite a strong desire for a solid finish in Alabama, the Owls faced challenges, with the best individual finishes being 26th and 34th place.
Looking ahead, the team aims to build on the momentum gained in Kansas as they prepare for the spring season. The goal is set on the American Athletic Conference Championships, NCAA Regional, and National tournaments. The Owls, led by All-Conference athletes like junior Raghav Chugh and Kirchdorfer, have their sights on the NCAA tournament.

Head coach Justin Emil expressed confidence in the team’s capabilities, saying, “The depth we have this year is a strength, and we’ll continue to leverage that as we compete in the spring.”
The spring schedule kicks off on February 13-14 in Montgomery, TX, at the Bentwater Classic at the Bentwater Country Club. The team is determined to showcase their potential and pursue their goal of making the NCAA tournament.
