Annual Witches Ride: Sees Hundreds Swap Broomsticks for Bicycles

Annual Witches Ride: MOBILE, Ala. Halloween is just around the corner, but the spooky celebrations are already in full swing. If you found yourself in Downtown Mobile on Sunday, the sight of hundreds of witches on bikes would have caught your eye.

In an annual tradition, locals don witch costumes and embark on a 3-mile bike ride through Downtown Mobile, all in support of Mobile’s four-legged friends.

“We’ve got hundreds and hundreds of witches descending on downtown right now. We’re here to support Delta Dogs,” explained Jennifer Greene, co-director of Delta Dogs. “We provide free veterinary care and spay and neuter to the pets of people in need in Mobile. A lot of times, we find that people that are elderly, homeless, just in a bad spot need help with their pets and we’re here to help them.”

While some opted for a more wicked witch look, others embraced their unique styles.

Regardless of the chosen theme, everyone agreed that the day was memorable.

“It’s awesome to come together, have a good time and have it all be for a great cause,” expressed one participant.

“Great cause, great ride, great fun, great weather, dress up like a witch…why not,” added another.

Participants dedicated weeks to planning and creating their perfect costumes, and even their bicycles received special attention with hand-decorated details.

Most of the witches are seasoned Mardi Gras enthusiasts, always up for a good time.

“Mobile’s tagline is ‘born to celebrate,’ and that’s what we’re doing no matter what holiday it is; we’re celebrating. It’s a great city,” declared one participant.

The Witches Ride concluded with a lively block party, capping off the festivities in style.
