Jimmy Buffett Tribute: Florida A1A Highway Renaming in Honor of Legendary Musician

Jimmy Buffett Tribute: A Florida congressman passed a bill to rename State Road A1A after Jimmy Buffett. This path goes from Key West to Fernandina Beach.

Buffett died after battling Merkel cell cancer. He was a musical genius who blended country twang with tropical rhythms. The 76-year-old has been telling stories about his trips for over 50 years.

His fans supported his dream of a life with flip-flops, beaches, water trips, and drinks. Chuck Clemons, a Republican state representative, introduced House Bill 91, which grants “honorary designation” to specific sections of State Road A1A in select counties. If the rule passes, the road along Florida’s east coast will be named the “Jimmy Buffett Memorial Highway.

This change would affect parts of S.R. A1A in multiple counties. In the upcoming 2024 Florida legislative session, a bill commemorates the singer’s love for the Sunshine State.

Buffett was born in Mississippi and grew up in Alabama, but Florida was unique to him. A trip to Key West 1971 was a turning point for his music, travel, and storytelling.

This trip inspired his songwriter character. In Dec 1974, his record “A1A” caused a stir with the song “Trying to Reason With Hurricane Season,” paying tribute to the coastal road that might be named after him.
