Bexar County District Attorney Office: The Bexar County District Attorney’s Office wants to add $1 million to its budget plan for 2024. would bring the total to $52,518,176. This plan needs to be approved by commissioners, which is set to happen next year.
The budget rise includes higher salaries for the staff and the hiring of 11 new people. DA Joe Gonzales has estimated that his office has about 200 criminal prosecutors working on 57,000 cases.
In the last budget, commissioners approved hiring 16 more people to help deal with the cases caused by delays caused by the pandemic. But as of Friday, Gonzales said his office is still about 20 attorneys short.
A KSAT Investigates story showed that many people left his office this year. Gonzales said this was because they had a lot of work to do and needed to make more money. After that, county employees were given raises by the judges.
Earlier, at a press conference, County Judge Peter Sakai said that a group of county and city commissioners would work together to devise ways to put violent criminals in jail.
Sakai talked about the difficulties of his job and his plans to deal with them. He said, “I want you all to know that this is a hard job, and I have a hard job to do, and I’m going to do it.”
The committee will meet after the budget has been settled. But Sakai worries about recent policy changes that have led to fewer jailed people. He wonders if these changes have led to an increase in violent crimes against police officers.
One of these changes was caused by a new state rule that made Gonzales give up his “declination policy,” which meant that minor drug possession cases were dropped. This rule had been in place for four years.
