September 11th World History: September 11, 2001 – Terrorist Attacks in the U.S.: The al-Qaeda terrorist attacks on the US are the most famous event of this date. Four commercial jets were hijacked early that morning by 19 people. United Airlines Flight 175 and American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the North and South towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. Within hours, both skyscrapers collapsed.

American Airlines Flight 77 hit the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, third. United Airlines Flight 93 crashed into a Pennsylvania field as passengers tried to stop the terrorists. These attacks killed about 3,000 individuals, making them the deadliest terrorist strike ever.

1973: A military coup in Chile led by General Augusto Pinochet overthrew the elected president Salvador Allende. Pinochet established a dictatorship that lasted until 1990.

September 11, 1941 – Pentagon’s Groundbreaking: On this day, work began on building the Pentagon, where the U.S. Department of Defense is located. On Jan 15, 1943, it was done.

September 11, 1609 – Henry Hudson Discovers Manhattan Island: On this day, Manhattan was discovered by Henry Hudson, an English traveler working for the Dutch East India Company.

September 11, 1297 – Battle of Stirling Bridge: In the First War of Scottish Independence, the Scots defeated the English at Stirling Bridge. Wallace and Moray led the Scots.
