Hollywood Awards Shows Postponed: Strikes by Writers and Actors Halt Major Events

Hollywood Awards Shows Postponed: Due to strikes, the 14th Governors Awards and 75th Primetime Emmy Awards were moved. The Governors Awards, initially scheduled for November 18, 2023, may be rescheduled to January 9, 2024. The Emmys were on September 18, but now they’ll be on January 15, 2024. The Emmy Awards will skip a year for the first time since 1949. Labor disputes in Hollywood halted film production, prompting the current reprogramming. On May 2, the WGA went on strike. On July 14, SAG-AFTRA went on strike. During negotiations, there have been delays and postponements in the entertainment industry, impacting movies, award shows, and other projects.

Angela Bassett, Mel Brooks, and editor Carol Littleton will receive special Oscars at the rescheduled Governors Awards. Michelle Satter of Sundance Institute will receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. Fox will air the Emmys on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day from LA Live, but no host has been announced. HBO has 127 Emmy nominations, the most. Shows like “Succession,” “The Last of Us,” and “The White Lotus” account for 74 votes.

The Creative Arts Emmy Awards, honoring art and technology, have also been affected. The awards, originally scheduled for Sept. 9 and 10, will now be held over two nights, starting on January 6 and ending on January 13 at 8 p.m. EST on FXX. The Daytime Emmy Awards, scheduled for June 16, will also be impacted. The awards for soap operas and talk shows have been postponed indefinitely. Adam Sharp, CEO of the Academy, said, “We’re excited for our community to celebrate our 50th anniversary.”

New movies haven’t been left alone. The “Dune: Part Two” release date was delayed from November 3 to March 15, 2024. This means it won’t qualify for the 2023 awards. Warner Bros. has moved “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” to April 12, 2024. “Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim” and other Sony Pictures movies like “Kraven the Hunter” and “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse” have been impacted, with a new release date of December 13, 2024. The movie release dates still need to be set.

The strikes caused a domino effect, changing movie release dates. The comedy “Drive-Away Dolls” by Ethan Coen was originally set to release on September 22 but was rescheduled to February 23. The 49th annual “AFI Life Achievement Award: A Tribute to Nicole Kidman” hasn’t announced a new date yet. Changes and delays are causing problems for the entertainment business. This affects everything from award shows to releases. Despite ongoing labor talks, Hollywood remains in a holding pattern, awaiting solutions to resume business.
