Georgia GOP House Speaker Opposes Colleagues: Efforts to Defund District Attorney Amid Hurricane Crisis

Georgia GOP House Speaker Opposes Colleagues: Georgia House Speaker Jon Burns (R) has publicly chastised Republicans for trying to decrease funds for Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis (D). He warned that this could violate the state constitution and endanger public safety. In a letter, Burns wrote to the GOP that Hurricane Idalia victims should be prioritized before criminal justice reform.

The Hill received Burns’ letter in response to Republican proposals for a special session to impeach and remove Willis or limit her office’s financing. According to northwest Georgia State Sen. Colton Moore, Willis’s “political persecution” of former President Donald Trump should cost her cash. Willis charged Trump and 18 others with plotting to rig the 2020 Georgia presidential election earlier this month.

Burns warned that cutting district attorney funding could endanger public safety. He warned that funding cuts could prevent the prosecution of murder, rape, and armed robbery. “If members were really concerned about serious crime in Atlanta, cutting the district attorney’s budget would hurt public safety,” he wrote.

The House Speaker also warned that targeting a district attorney could violate the Georgia Constitution’s division of powers. We took an oath to protect the Georgia Constitution and US laws as General Assembly members. In the letter, Burns said, “We trust that our criminal justice system will handle this matter fairly and impartially, and we will not get involved in this case in a way that goes against the oaths we took.”

Burns illustrated the difficulty of cutting a district attorney’s budget. He claimed that cutting the pay of one district attorney or junior district attorney would cut the income of all district attorneys in the state. Circuits don’t get money separately. Instead, based on judges and other considerations, each circuit funds one district attorney and one assistant district attorney.

Burns regretted that the political intrigue over funding cuts was distracting from Hurricane Idalia. “It’s a sad fact of modern politics that showmanship can get more attention than real human needs,” he wrote. This will happen today in south and coastal Georgia.” Willis indicted Trump and 18 others for attempting to rig the 2020 Georgia presidential election. This led to fund cuts. Some Republicans and Trump supporters in Washington and Georgia have criticized Willis for the claim.

Georgia Republican House Speaker Jon Burns has criticized fellow Republicans who seek to decrease money for Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis as the state recovers from Hurricane Ida. Burns thinks this could violate state law and endanger the public. Burns hopes his letter will remind the General Assembly of Georgia’s critical human needs.
