Concerns Florence Residents: Speeding and Litter Raise Alarms in the Neighborhood

Concerns Florence Residents: In Florence’s Historic College District, concerns about speeding and disregard for stop signs have prompted neighbors to unite in addressing the issue. Janet Spencer, representing the community, emphasizes the escalating problem, exacerbated since Gilbert Court apartments transformed into student housing.

“We want city officials, the police department, and UNA to get this under control,” Spencer urges, citing the need for law adherence and speed control in the residential area. The recent transformation has brought forth speeding issues, creating potential hazards on roads like Gilbert Court, Leila, and Willingham.

City councilwoman Kaytrina Simmons, representing the neighborhood, shares the concern and states that Florence police are actively patrolling the area to curb speeding. The safety of pedestrians and children is a priority, with two tickets already issued to an offender in one day.

Jimmy Czermak, a resident, hopes increased patrols will discourage reckless driving and maintain the safety of this well-regarded neighborhood. Expressing surprise at the absence of severe accidents, Czermak emphasizes the need to preserve the area’s charm.

UNA officials respond to concerns, stating that students are made aware of residential zones through housing contracts. Housing and Residential Life stress the importance of being good neighbors to ensure a harmonious coexistence between students and the community.
